On May 29, CCTV captured the moment when a man escaped from a prison vehicle outside the North Tyneside Police Station in the United Kingdom. According to local media reports, Robert Friendship Smith told a guard in the car that he felt unwell. He was rolled a bottle of water under the cell door, but he said he couldn’t reach it. Then, the door of the cell was gently opened to pass the water to him. The security guard was then “distracted” by another prisoner, at which time Smith was able to reach around the door, unchain the chain, open it fully, and then leave the vehicle. The report added that when he was running, the outer gate was opened to allow a police car to enter, allowing Smith to exit the gate and onto the highway. According to reports, he was arrested within a week and subsequently sentenced to six months in prison. He has been convicted 58 times before.
