Coles is piloting a “bring your own container” system in a store in central Melbourne to reduce the use of plastic.
Tests in Fitzroy’s Coles Local store will apply to certain dry products.
“To help reduce plastic packaging, Coles Local is piloting a new’bring your own’ container system for selected dry spoons and weighing products at the Fitzroy store in Melbourne,” a Coles spokesperson said.
The product line includes seeds, nuts and other snacks.
Buying food in large quantities to avoid wasting plastic has become a trend in Australia, and specialty stores are popping up all over the country.

Coles will try to get customers to put other products in containers brought from home.
The supermarket giant has started to provide supplementary laundry soap in a store near Moonee Ponds in Melbourne and hygiene products in a store in Chatswood, a suburb of Sydney.
“We have partnered with Unilever to provide a range of replenishable conditioners, shower gels and laundry detergents at the laundry soap replenishment station in Moonee Ponds in Melbourne and the’eco store’ in Chatswood in Sydney,” said a Coles spokesperson. .
