This week, OPPO Announced the most ambitious phone in years: Oppo Find N, a foldable phone designed to solve key issues affecting other such phones.
It is much cheaper than the competition. It has the least obvious hinge crease we have seen in a foldable phone so far. Oppo Find N is also easier to use with one hand than other foldable devices. Samsung Galaxy Flip series.
This is progress. However, at first glance, it doesn’t matter. Oppo Find N will only be launched in Oppo’s home country, China. Although the brand’s popularity in the country continues to increase, it is unlikely that we will see this phone widely released in the UK. Given that Oppo has almost no presence there, it seems impossible to launch it in the United States. In the same event, Oppo also launched its version of Google Glass, Air glass, Again does not plan to release outside of China.
Therefore, if we cannot use Oppo Find N, why should we write it?
Big BBK shaped shadow
Oppo is not a completely independent entity. It is part of one of the least recognized consumer technology giants—at least in the West. According to data from Counterpoint Research, Oppo is a brand of BBK Electronics, which took advantage of Huawei’s decline to account for more than 44% of the entire smartphone market in China.
This dwarfs Apple, Xiaomi and Samsung. Backgammon Electronics is taking steps to change its strategy in the West, using the “odd” OnePlus in its lineup. Soon we will see some of Find N’s technology in OnePlus phones.
The main mobile phone brands of BBK are Oppo, Vivo, Realme, OnePlus and IQOO. OnePlus is the only one of these brands that is widely distributed in the United States, and the only one that can be said to have not been clearly identified as a Chinese company. According to reports, its long-term success is the result of an out-of-control experiment.
OnePlus was established at the end of 2013. The co-founders are 24-year-old Carl Pei and 38-year-old Pete Lau. The two have already worked together at Oppo.
It is not uncommon to see the founders of tech startups in their twenties. But OnePlus is not a real startup, just like startups at the time. This is a project funded by a tech giant—not the kind of people you expected to fall into the arms of someone who dropped out of business school a few years ago, like Pei did.
Imagine that Samsung today divested a new mobile phone brand, exclusively launched by some new face co-founders through TikTok. That is OnePlus.
It took only four months from the establishment of OnePlus to the launch of the mobile phone. This is probably impossible without using the existing supply chain and manufacturing partners of BBK Electronics.
The result is almost unimaginably good. OnePlus’ One mobile phone has encountered a supply and demand situation that is no different from today’s Xbox Series X and PS5, albeit on a much smaller scale. In hindsight, OnePlus One could be a disaster. but it is not the truth. This is a really good phone, almost certainly the most valuable “high-end” phone in the world at the time.
