That doesn’t really matter here, as Samsung packs in a slightly larger 4,500 mAh battery (versus 4,000 mAh for the S21) and it lasts comfortably all day — sometimes enough to last until the next morning, depending on usage . This is arguably the only area where the S21 FE is significantly better than its predecessor. The S21 lasted me a day, but only barely.
camera talk
The measure of a good camera is when I take pictures with it without hesitation. This can happen a lot when you test as many phones as I do, and the camera quality varies. I’m happy to say that I’ve taken a lot of photos since I started testing the S21 FE. I like them!
The triple-camera system retains a similar (if not identical) 12-MP main sensor and 12-MP ultra-wide as the original Galaxy S21. These results are sharp, colorful, and generally well-exposed, albeit without the contrast I like. Even with Samsung’s dedicated Night Mode at night, you can usually expect a sharp, fairly detailed image.
Where things diverge is the telephoto zoom camera. You still get 3x optical zoom, but the sensor drops from 64-megapixel to 8-megapixel. It can take some great photos during the day, but at night I almost always prefer the S21’s 64-megapixel zoom camera. It produces more detailed photos with better colors. Here’s the reverse story for the selfie camera: the S21 FE has a 32-megapixel sensor, a step up from the 10-megapixel selfie camera on the S21. My selfies on the FE had better contrast, better skin tones, and finer detail.
awkward timing
Honestly, there’s nothing to dislike here. The only bug I encountered was with Samsung’s Gallery app, which triggered the blue light filter and turned the screen yellow, even when I turned the filter off. Otherwise, the S21 FE works well, with a nice screen, versatile camera, and a solid battery. Oh, and Samsung guarantees 3 Android OS upgrades and 4 years of security updates, which is among the best in the Android phone industry.
But isn’t it $700 value? I would say $599 Google Pixel 6 More useful software features and a more powerful camera system are more valuable. Sure, it lacks a 3x optical zoom camera, but Google’s image processing is excellent, and it delivers better digitally zoomed photos than the S21 FE (especially at night).
If the upcoming S22 costs $800 like its predecessor, you might be missing out on some valid upgrades almost Same price. Fan or not, you should wait for the sale.
