Data2vec is part of a megatrend in artificial intelligence Models that can learn to understand the world in many ways“It’s a brilliant idea,” says Ani Kembhavi of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Seattle, who studies vision and language. “In terms of universal learning systems, this is a promising advance.”
An important caveat is that while the same learning algorithm can be used for different skills, it can only learn one skill at a time. Once it learns to recognize images, it has to learn to recognize speech from scratch. Giving an AI multiple skills at once is hard, but it’s something the Meta AI team wants to work on next.
The researchers were surprised to find that their method actually outperformed state-of-the-art at recognizing images and speech, and performed as well as leading language models at text understanding.
Mark Zuckerberg has Envisioning potential metaverse applications“It’s all going to eventually be built into AR glasses with an AI assistant,” he posted on Facebook today. “It could help you make dinner, notice if you’ve missed an ingredient, prompt you to turn off the heat, or more complex tasks.”
For Auli, the main takeaway is that researchers should get out of their silos. “Hey, you don’t need to focus on one thing,” he said. “If you have a great idea, it might actually help you across the board.”
