Last year Pride, instead of waving rebellious flags and dancing in the street, we stayed at home, hiding behind masks, not sure when we could get together again. For the older generation of LGBTQ people, it brought back the shock wave of the frightening early stage of the AIDS epidemic, when homosexuals were left to take care of each other, and no one else, including the government, would do so.
The mood of Pride is usually bright and cheerful, but its origin is not.It commemorates the riots that gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders fought back Police raid on Stonewall Bar Late at night on June 28, 1969. At the time, police raids on a few gay clubs were commonplace, and anti-gay laws were written in books from east to west. As the size and ferocity of the crowd increased, the confrontation continued for several days.
Powerful six-part document series pride, The video played on Hulu shows the impact of the riots as it documents the LGBTQ civil rights struggle in the United States from the 1950s to the present. This is the trailer.
Over the years, the scale of Pride has continued to expand. In 2019, more than 5 million people in New York City celebrated the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. That year, an estimated 150,000 people and 700 groups marched through the streets of Manhattan for 12 hours. Of course, the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of events scheduled to take place globally in 2020.
The good news for 2021 is that vaccination rates are increasing faster than anyone thought. Half of Americans have received at least one doseThis was a bright spot in the dark times, but for event organizers who took months to plan the celebrations, it was too late. This means that there will be very few face-to-face events this month, and the suppressed queer energy of millions of people who have recently been vaccinated bursts out.
This year, there is still some uncertainty in the ongoing pandemic, that is, who can go out and who can’t go out. Fortunately, there are many amazing things happening online that you can experience without going out. “We prepared something for everyone,” Dan Dimant said as he became New York Pride After serving as a volunteer for many years, last September. “All content is listed on nycpride.org. There are activities for young people, families, people who like to cook, and movie lovers. We try to reach a range of different interests and groups in our community.”
This is the online flash, glamour and glory planned for the pride of the last pandemic. Most activities are free.
