The dean of the school, L. Rafael Reif, shared these ideas with alumni volunteers at a meeting of the Alumni Leadership Conference (ALC) in 2021. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alumni Association (MITAA) officially launched a Better World for MIT Alumni Service plan. Through a digital platform hosted by MITAA, the program enables alumni to communicate their efforts with colleagues around the world. There are three main ways to participate. Invite alumni to submit their ongoing projects to increase their visibility and recruit others who are interested in participating. Alumni seeking to participate in new volunteer opportunities can search existing projects by reason type to find ways to share skills and knowledge. Finally, the association is recruiting “service ambassadors”, which are volunteers who can work in the network of nearly 143,000 alumni, to provide more support for these projects.
Inspire others to act
Although the Better World Service Program for MIT Alumni is a new endeavor, serving the community has been the backbone of the MIT alumni experience since the college opened its first class. The association itself was established in 1875, “to promote the well-being of the college in school and each other.” Later, in 1896, the Class Secretarial Association became one of the first volunteer groups of MITAA, and it continues to work hard to track class history and maintain it today. Its members are united in the pages of this publication.
Although the Institute has benefited from a large number of advocates—more than 27,000 alumni and friends volunteered during the MIT Movement for a Better World—but the new initiative focuses on the world outside the campus. (For the latest examples of alumni in action, please see the sidebar on the right.) This spring, when the Association awarded its first MIT Alumni Better World Service Award to an individual whose service work has inspired alumni and peers At that time, this tradition will be further respected.
With the launch of the MIT Alumni Service for a Better World, MIT hopes that outstanding examples will inspire others to share, connect, and enhance their personal contributions, and unite forces to have a greater impact.
“The ultimate vision of the association is to’participate and inspire the global MIT community to create a better world,” said Whitney T. Espich, CEO of the association. “If we want to achieve this promise, we need to use all the energy points, which includes considering the exponential power of our alumni to serve others.
