“As other smartphone makers race towards 5G, Apple is holding back. There are both sensible business reasons and Apple-specific reasons for doing so.

5G right now is a mess. The only US-compatible 5G chipset ready for a fall launch is the Qualcomm X50. It’s in all of the existing 5G phones, but it doesn’t “just work” the way Apple wants its devices to work. It isn’t compatible with the US carriers’ upcoming multi-band networks, and it appears to make devices overheat in the summer. The antenna modules for the early 5G networks are also finicky at best.”

iPad

The company also introduced a new 10.2-inch iPad, which was replacing the 9.7-inch model. The seventh-generation device has Apple’s A10 Fusion chip built-in, which is 2x faster than the top-selling PC. It also features a Retina display, an 8-megapixel camera. The iPad is compatible with Apple’s smart keyboard and the first-generation Apple Pencil.

The device starts at $329 and $299 for education customers. They are available now for order and will start shipping on Sept. 30.

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch Series 5 starts with the GPS version at $399 and then bumps up to $499 with 4G network connectivity. It’s available for order now and reaches the stores on Sept. 20th

The new device allows the users to be able to see the time and notifications even when they haven’t raised their wrist thanks to its always-on display. Despite the always-on display, the makers promise an 18hour thanks to the new low-temperature polysilicon and oxide display and a low-power display driver.

“That brings the Apple Watch up to speed with rivals like Fitbit, which just announced the Versa 2 smartwatch which has an always-on screen. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch also has a screen that can stay on to show the time and other bits of information, even if you’re not looking directly at it.”

The company continues to center the watch on health and fitness. The watch also offers new features like a compass and international emergency calling.

“The device now has menstrual cycle tracking, as part of the watchOS 6 software, as well as a new research app, which is set to launch in the US later this year. Users can enroll in three studies to start, such as hearing, women’s health and heart and movement.”

The new watch models come in titanium casing for the first time. Other casing materials for the watch include aluminum, ceramic and stainless steel.
