How to make a ham casserole

Although I am still obsessed with my grandmother’s original recipe from time to time, today’s comfort ham casserole is a lighter, more modern version that any family can enjoy on a regular basis.

It is quite healthy and can make great leftovers.

  • To supplement and enhance the ham and cheddar cheese, I added fried onions and mud sage.
  • I kept the irresistible crumb topping (mandatory), but gave up the creamy mushroom soup.

I feel dizzy at the magic between sage, ham and cheddar cheese, but my favorite part of this dish is white sauce.

A bit of butter and half are needed, but the remaining thickness comes from Greek yogurt and a handful of sharp white cheddar cheese.

  • Ham. Ham is always very popular, rich in flavor and delicious. It goes well with the cheesy cream sauce. It is also a lean protein rich in vitamins and selenium.

  • Store. Keep the remaining casserole in an airtight storage container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat. Reheat leftovers in a baking dish in a 350°F oven or microwave.
  • freeze. Put the casserole in an airtight, freezer storage container and freeze for up to 3 months. Let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

  • 1/2 Cup Loosely packaged fresh sage leaves Slice into thin slices and dive
  • 3 Spoon Unsalted butter
  • 1 Finely chopped small yellow onions
  • 3 teaspoon Minced garlic
  • 1/4 Cup All-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 Cup Skimmed milk
  • 1/4 Cup Half and half
  • 3/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg powder
  • 1/2 Cup Pure full-fat Greek yogurt Do not use fat-free or it may condense
  • 1 Cup Freshly grated white cheddar cheese

Bread crumb ingredients:

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. According to the package instructions, add the pasta to the water and cook until it is chewy. Drain and set aside.

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a 9×13 or similar baking sheet.

  • Melt the butter in a Dutch oven or similar large saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and sauté until they start to soften, about 6 minutes.

  • Sprinkle in the flour and stir frequently until the flour is golden brown, about 2 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

  • Gradually pour the milk, stirring constantly, and then half each. Continue to cook until the sauce thickens slowly, about 7 minutes.

  • Remove from heat, then add salt and nutmeg, then Greek yogurt, cheddar cheese, and half of sage.

  • Add the drained pasta and ham, and stir gently.

  • Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking pan.

  • Combine the breadcrumbs and olive oil in a small bowl and sprinkle on top of the pasta. Cover the plate with foil, then cover and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for another 10 minutes, until the breadcrumbs are golden brown and the pasta is hot and bubbly. If necessary, turn your broiler up to complete the browning of the breadcrumbs and watch them carefully to prevent them from burning. Remove the baked pasta from the oven, sprinkle with the remaining sage, and serve.

  • Store: Put the casserole in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
