The Central Bank of Thailand postpones CBDC testing until the end of 2022: report

According to a Reuters report on Friday, the Bank of Thailand will postpone the central bank digital currency (CBDC) test from the second quarter to the end of next year.

  • Retail CBDC will serve as “Similar cash activities within a limited scale,” the bank’s assistant governor Vachira Arromdee said in August.
  • According to Reuters, Bank of Thailand Deputy Governor Kasidit Tansanguan stated that Thailand will be slow and cautious in testing digital currencies, “because it does have the same fund transfer or payment problems as some other countries.”
  • According to Reuters, the pilot project will test deposits, withdrawals and transfers, involving approximately 10,000 users.
