Software giant Microsoft announced today that it has completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, one of the largest game developers and publishers in the gaming industry. The deal, which involves an all-cash deal worth $68.7 billion, will give Microsoft ownership of major franchises such as Call of Duty, Candy Crush, World of Warcraft and Diablo. The company also mentioned that the acquisition will provide the cornerstone for Metaverse.
Microsoft to acquire Activision to build its Metaverse
Microsoft, one of the world’s leading software companies, Announce Acquired Activision Blizzard, a game development company with more than 10,000 employees worldwide. The deal, which will involve a $68.7 billion deal, is the company’s largest acquisition of its kind, according to the release. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on the acquisition:
We are investing heavily in world-class content, communities and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first, making games safe, inclusive and accessible to all.
The acquisition will give Microsoft control of major franchises such as Call of Duty, Candy Crush, World of Warcraft and Diablo, which collectively have more than 400 million monthly active players.
Gaming as a Key Part of the Metaverse
For Nadella, the Activision acquisition would accelerate the development of Microsoft and its gaming environment, and would lay the foundation for Microsoft’s forays into the virtual world. In this regard, Nadella said:
Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category of entertainment on all platforms today, and will play a key role in the development of the Metaverse platform.
While the company hasn’t announced any moves related to the metaverse involving its gaming division or the Xbox environment, Nadella hinted at more developments in that regard.However, the company is adopting its metaverse for the office in its own form network. Mesh will allow people using Microsoft Teams to meet and chat with online avatars, replacing video conferencing for a more immersive and engaging experience.
Many blockchain gaming companies have already presented their vision of the metaverse with various results. The Sandbox, a metaverse game featuring user-created NFTs, has caught the attention of various companies including PWC Hong Kong. invest on the virtual land of the platform. Animoca Brands, the company behind the game, recently raised $358 million to support its web3 project and build its Metaverse.
