Last month, Serj Tankian, the lead singer of System of a Down, hosted an art exhibition with the non-fungible token (NFT) platform and market Curio NFT. The physical and virtual art exhibition is called “Not for Touching”. Tankian told Bitcoin.com this week that he believes that NFT technology has opened new doors for his artistic expression.
This week, Bitcoin.com News talked with the lead singer of System of a Down’s (SoaD), Sergi Tangian, About non-fungible token (NFT) technology and how it enables him to express his art in new ways. In December, Tankan and Antique NFT An art exhibition called “Not for Touching” was held to showcase the artist’s NFT artwork.
Tankian has been an artist for many years, but NFT provides SoaD singers with a new way to “influence multiple senses at the same time”. He emphasized that he is always interested in “making a stronger impact on art”. The following is an in-depth discussion with SoaD’s Serj Tankian recorded by Bitcoin.com News on January 5.
Bitcoin.com News (BCN): You recently entered the world of NFT. Can you tell our readers how you discovered NFT technology?
Serge Tangian: I found out by reading the news. See how different artists publish NFTs. We are remodeling the house, I have a lot of reading time, I think “Wow, this is really interesting.” Since I have been engaged in art for many years, and music-related art, I thought “Wow, this may be one of the things I’m doing. New platform.” So this is where the link of this idea comes into play.
BCN: Recently, you and Curio NFT held an art exhibition called “Not for Touching”. Can you tell our readers about this incident and how it went on?
Serge Tangian: The event went very smoothly and they set up a virtual gallery, which is very interesting for me. To be able to enter this gallery and view my works, of course N Then go another way and see another NFT job on the other wall. It’s really cool, the settings are really good, this is my first time in this world as an artist.
I have always been interested in the ability to affect multiple senses at the same time as a way to have a stronger impact on art. I did this with my music art, which we call “Take sound as an eye. “We use an application that can perform optical recognition. When you walk into the physical gallery, you can listen to each painting with your smartphone or earphones.
This is like an immersive experience. With NFT, animation and digital painting can be used to make paintings truly lifelike. Like my good friend Roger Kupelian, he has participated in the creation of “The Lord of the Rings” and many movies, and his paintings are vivid in the background music. So I am very excited about this because the launch of this product is incredible.
BCN: Do you collect any other assets from a specific NFT collection?
Serge Tangian: I haven’t so far. To be honest, I am not a large physical art collector, although I produce physical art. I do have some paintings of good friends. Maybe this is because I am a minimalist in some ways. I don’t like clutter, even on hard drives. I have a lot of collector friends, they like to collect art, collect things, NFT, but I am just not a collector. I am an artist, I produce.
BCN: Do Down’s other systems like NFT?
Serge Tangian: I didn’t actually ask them. I’m not sure any of them bought it. I would doubt it, but maybe Shavo (SoaD bassist Shavo Odadjian), because he is very technically friendly and compared to others. So it may be Shavo, but I’m not sure.
BCN: Why do you think NFT is the “next step” of artistic creation?
Serge Tangian: I mean that sentence is aimed at me. Because it gave me a new platform that can add a dimension of experience that I cannot physically add. That is to climb into the virtual space, I can make the paintings move and make them dance.
Where in the physical space, painted on the wall, they are not dancing, but the music production you enter into, which is beautiful. But now I can use NFT to fill the space between the wall and the listener. I look forward to finding more spaces, whether virtual or physical, that can further interact with multiple senses in order to increase the artist’s visual effectiveness.
BCN: In addition to NFT, have you participated in other types of blockchain projects, such as Bitcoin and other encrypted assets?
Serge Tangian: Not really. I don’t know the fuck. When it comes to blockchain, Bitcoin, and any of them, I am totally a naive person.I don’t have any, for me [NFT tech] It’s a new world to show my art, so this is where I am interested. But I don’t know much about blockchain, but I have some friends who bought Bitcoin early and they are very enthusiastic.
BCN: Many people believe that blockchain technology can remove parasitic third parties from various elements in our lives. Do you agree?
Serge Tangian: I think this is absolutely true. I think it is a disruptive technology to some extent, or it is not disruptive, maybe it is an alternative. You will consider the gold standard and how currencies used to be based on gold. Then they got rid of the gold standard because they couldn’t find enough gold. They extend beyond this range, so most currencies are based on the integrity of the country’s government.
With blockchain and Bitcoin, you are outside the system. For me, the whole thing is very interesting, including NFT, because the human character that agrees to evaluate things in a specific way is very interesting.
BCN: Do you plan to hold more NFT exhibitions featuring your work?
Serge Tangian: I do. But I want to find the next level. I really want to make a physical gallery or museum exhibition, where each of my paintings has these physically isolated spaces, and you can create more encounters between the virtual and physical worlds. You can interact with multiple dimensions of art, including painting, it’s definitely the music around you, maybe some tactile and olfactory elements, lights, and bring the virtual world into it. Maybe NFT can be projected. In real space, I began to consider the increase of the effectiveness of multiple dimensions and artistic effects.
