Ingredients

ingredients to make overnight oats

Here are all of the ingredients you need to make this delicious raspberry overnight oats recipe.

  • Rolled oats or old-fashioned oats are the preferred oat for making overnight oats. You don’t want quick oats because the result will be mushy oatmeal. Steel-cut oats need too long to process and end up crunchy. If you have a gluten allergy or sensitivities, please use gluten-free certified rolled oats.
  • Unsweetened coconut milkalmond milk, or any dairy-free milk will work. You can also use dairy milk.
  • Frozen raspberries or fresh raspberries both work in this recipe. I prefer frozen because I love the juices that release into the oatmeal as it thaws, and it’s cheaper to purchase organic frozen raspberries over fresh ones.
  • Chia seeds are my go-to superfood for all overnight oat recipes because they add omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein. They also give the oatmeal a delicious pudding-like texture.
  • Pure maple syrup balances out the tart flavor of the raspberries.
  • Sliced almonds for crunch and protein.

How to Make Raspberry Overnight Oats

  • Add the rolled oats and chia seeds to a 16-mason jar container. Of course, you can use any container with a lid (I recommend glass), but mason jars are my favorite.
  • Stir in the milk and raspberries to the oat mixture. You want to make sure the oats are submerged in the milk completely. If you need to add a little more liquid, then do so.
  • Place the lid on and stick the overnight oats in the refrigerator for 5 hours or overnight.
  • The next morning give the oatmeal a couple of stirs and add the maple syrup. This raspberry oats recipe requires more maple syrup than I use in other overnight oat recipes because raspberries can have a tart flavor.
  • After you stir in the maple syrup, add a couple of splashes of milk to the oats if they seem thick. Do this until you get the consistency you want. Pour into a bowl or eat straight from the jar.
  • Sprinkle with sliced almonds and extra raspberries. I prefer to add the nuts in the morning to prevent them from getting soggy soaking in the liquid all night.

Cooking Tips

  • Swap in honey or your favorite natural sweetener for the maple syrup.
  • Make a raspberry chocolate overnight oats by stirring in one tablespoon of cacao powder or a couple of teaspoons of mini chocolate chips.
  • For another layer of flavor stir in a splash of pure vanilla extra or almond extract.
  • Use any of your favorite nuts or leave them out if you prefer not to use them. Or sprinkle with homemade almond butter granola for an extra crunch.
  • Any dairy or non-dairy milk can be substituted. I don’t recommend using water or juice.
  • Chia seeds add to the creamy texture to the raspberry almond overnight oats, but you can swap in or use extra superfoods to bulk up the nutrition. Flaxseeds or hemp hearts both work in oatmeal recipes.
  • Stir in a tablespoon of greek yogurt for a raspberry cheesecake flavor and extra protein.
  • A tablespoon of almond butter, peanut butter, or any nut butter is delicious!
  • You can stir in a tablespoon of raspberry jam for an extra layer of raspberry flavor, but be careful of the extra sugar and calories.
  • Of course, you can swap in strawberries, blackberries, or any of your favorite berries.
  • For a burst of fresh flavor stir in lemon rest or lemon juice. Or for a warmer flavor use cinnamon or other fall spices.

Storage tips

You can prepare up to five jars of raspberry overnight oats and store them in the refrigerator for breakfast all week. As the oats sit in the fridge, they will become thick, so you’ll likely need to add a few splashes of milk to loosen the oats until you get the consistency you want. Don’t worry; this does not change the flavor.

You can also freeze overnight oats ahead of time into kits, and this is a great way to ensure you have the ingredients ready ahead of time. To learn more, check out my how-to freeze overnight oats tutorial.
