as a child, I would sit on the balcony of our Dhaka apartment overlooking the pond and flip through our two family albums. After the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, film was scarce and our cameras broke. With nowhere to repair or buy film, we haven’t had more family photos in nearly a decade. There were no pictures of me until I was 8 years old.

Those tiny, jewel-like black-and-white prints of my parents and brother are fragments of my history that, as curator Gren Helfand puts it, “capture a fraction of a second of activity and serve as a narrative for generations to come. On the balcony by that pond, I knew exactly what the photo was. However, 25 years later, sitting in my studio surrounded by thermal cameras, lidars, 3D printers and AI software, I’m not so sure anymore.

Much of today’s photo criticism and theories are still actively debating the past, with little regard for what’s to come. For example, American artist Trevor Paglen’s 2017 exhibition “Invisible Image Research“Investigates “machine vision”—images made by machines for consumption by other machines, such as facial recognition systems. Jerry Saltz, Senior Art Critic New York magazine, announcing that the work is “conceptual zombie formalism“based on “smart pants jargon” rather than seriously engaging with the implications of his work. On the theoretical side, a large part photography theory, a 451-page book often used in teaching, focuses on indexability, the idea that taking a photo leaves a physical trace of the subject being photographed. This is problematic in analog photography, but completely absent in digital photography, unless the information is treated as a trace. Likewise, the book makes no mention of new or emerging technology and how it affects photography.

Evolving technologies affect every step of the photo-making process, and photographers are using them to question the very definition of photography itself. Is it a photo when it only captures light? Is it time for physical printing? When the image is 2D? Is it interactive? Object or Information? Or something else?

Any form of information can be captured for imaging. Artists used other inputs such as acoustic signals, matter particles such as electrons, and other forms of waves. American artist Robert Dash uses electron microscopes, using matter waves rather than light waves, to create very high-magnification images of natural objects, such as pollen or seeds found on the property he lives in. He then montages these photos with life-size photographs of the same objects, creating a surreal microscopic world.the first time i saw these photos, my eyes were scanning the landscape for any signs that could help find where the image might be taken, but without success.
