The Strapped Crew also tried early kitesurf equipment, launching a 60-foot antenna before most people even knew the sport existed. Lenny’s parents helped him follow the example of Strapped Crew, bought him a family jet ski for tug surfing, hired a competitive kite surfer for family lessons, and purchased one of the earliest foil boards.
Martin and Paula were indeed worried that Lenny had missed his childhood. “He was talking about flippers, board development, sales,” Martin explained, referring to Lenny’s early adolescence. “We thought,’God, he has to hang out with kids of the same age.’ We were going to force him to spend the night on a weekend, and he was like,’Dad, I really don’t want to go. “All the kids who learned windsurfing with him,” Martin said, “They all turned their backs on windsurfing and went surfing.”
Lenny didn’t change course at all—unless his personal course was about changing equipment and competitive focus—and began to lose to all these young experts in surfing competitions. Soon, he gave up the Xiaolang surfing competition.
By the way, wave surfing refers to regular old-fashioned competitive surfing-for example, no Big wave surfing. There is no clear dividing line between these two disciplines, but the regular competitive surfing practiced by Kelly Slater and all other superstar surfers usually takes place on waves about 20 feet below. For a while, Lenny avoided negativity by going to school at home, traveling the world in windsurfing and all other sports, and surfing in great white shark waves—like his childhood idol Hamilton. However, Lenny was only a teenager in 2010, when the other men and women of the great white shark figured out how to pad old surfboards into waves that were larger than conventional wisdom thought possible. The new Maui crew used their muscle power to capture 60-foot-long surfers, reigniting the popularity of traditional high-wave surfing.
