In those jobs after Google and before Facebook, has your view of technology companies deteriorated?
I still have a very positive attitude towards most Silicon Valley technology companies. I don’t think there is inherent decay or something like that. I really believe that any power, any platform with strong power needs transparency. Then I think we need to have a slightly different relationship with them.
By 2019, Facebook had suffered scandals and defected publicly. However, you joined the contaminated company.
In December 2018, a recruiter contacted me. I said that the only thing I had to do was to deal with citizen misinformation. I think we need more people to work inside Facebook to solve Facebook’s problems. I strongly encourage people to work on Facebook.
hold on. Even after you found all these damn documents, are you still urging people to join Facebook?
People question whether you can be an upright person and work on Facebook. If anything, Facebook is a flat enough organization, and if many people come there and are determined to fix it, I think they will actually have a positive impact.
However you left.
I do this because I can no longer stay and continue to live in Puerto Rico [where I moved for health reasons]. I still live in severe pain every day because I am paralyzed below the knee. Even now it is very difficult for me to return to the Bay Area, because it is cold and wet here, and every day I am here is very painful. So I had to choose between a more comfortable place or working on Facebook.
Wait-if Facebook tells you that you can work in Puerto Rico, will you still work there? And none of this will happen?
At some point, I will have to still go. At some point, you must start a conversation. But I don’t think I will leave at that moment.
So after they said you can’t work in Puerto Rico, you made this big decision to take these documents with you. Why do you think you are triggering this conversation?
I don’t believe they can solve the problem by themselves. The reality of any organizational design is that if you want to make a real change, you must have a large number of people dedicated to solving the problem. At Facebook, I am in a team of about seven or eight product managers and project managers. Within six weeks, the entire pod was gone. Most of them originally came from civic integrity. I don’t think I am the only one who thinks that Facebook has abandoned its mission or has not taken it seriously.
I am not a person who will avoid people in need. I volunteer at Burning Man as a forest ranger because I believe people will change with help. I don’t believe that people will change because of shame. Before I joined, I knew there was a problem with Facebook, and I endured some personal consequences from this because I had a radical friend. But when I arrived, I only considered the misinformation in the American context. I have never considered it in a more vulnerable part of the world. But even within two weeks after joining, I was like, “Oh my God, this is much worse than I thought.” So I think at some point in 2020, I start to realize how many lives are at stake .
