Now, krill has managed to fully improve its formula to create a compact, biodegradable and dimmable lamp, which consists of two to three Sicilian orange peels added to a biopolymer base derived from plant starch. Made in materials.
Domiziana Illengo, Krill’s marketing manager, said that apart from the abundance of oranges in Italy (Sicily produces about 3% of the world’s oranges), there are reasons why citrus peels are particularly useful. “The link between the basic biopolymers made from the fermentation of plant starches and the added materials from organic crops is that they need sugar to bind,” she said. “Oranges are particularly rich. Compared to the simple bowl it made for Autogrill, Krill’s main problem with the lamp’s structure was to allow the material to support the heavier top while still allowing it to stand firmly. The company went through seven prototypes to obtain the final design, in which the back was as straight as possible and the head was allowed to tilt without tilting or tilting to the side.
Obviously, the thing that really distinguishes Ohmie from other lights, except that it is made of orange peel, is due to its construction materials, which has a somewhat unpleasant smell. “It’s similar to orange biscuits, not just oranges, because through this process, the ingredients are baked,” Illengo said. “So it’s more reminiscent of cookies, really.”
Krill said that its cooked biscuit orange plastic can be used in any household 3D printer, but there may be quality control issues. The tricky aspect is that not all 3D printers are created with the idea of being able to print organic-enhanced bioplastic materials. “People who want to conduct experiments at home may find it difficult to get the right amount of calories,” Illengo said. “In the 3D printer, there is a chamber in which the material melts and then flows out of the nozzle on the other side. But because there is no 3D printer made specifically for biological materials, it is difficult to obtain an accurate temperature.”
