Artificial intelligence is everywhere. And more and more, it is becoming an important part of healthcare. Doctors use it to try to determine the symptoms of deadly infections such as sepsis; companies such as Google are developing applications that can help you identify diseases by uploading some pictures.
But the quality of artificial intelligence depends on the data sets input to these systems. When the data set is flawed or the results are not correctly interpreted, the software may misidentify symptoms (or fail to fully identify them). In some cases, this can even lead to false positives or exacerbate the already apparent racial disparities in the healthcare system.
On Gadget Lab this week, WIRED senior writer Tom Simonite discussed with us the blind spots of medical AI and what happens when technology companies put these algorithms in the hands of users.
