The Republic of Korea beat the Philippines 2-0 to advance to the 2022 AFC Asian Women’s Cup final for the first time in five attempts in a semi-final at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Stadium in Pune on Thursday.
South Korea scored a powerful header from a corner kick in the 4th minute, and Cho So Hyun scored. The Korean dominated the game, possessing over 70% possession for most of the game.
That lead widened to a two-goal cushion in the 33rd minute, when Sun Huayuan received Zhao Zhuhou’s cross from the left and slid the ball into the net from the near post, her eighth international strike.

South Korea could have easily added a little more on the scoreline, especially in the second half, but faced resistance from Oliva McDaniel’s goal. She saved several chances, especially in the final 20 minutes, to make sure the Korean didn’t do any more damage.
Her sister, Chandler McDaniel, who was crucial to the team’s offense on the way to the semifinals, had trouble in the quarterfinals against Chinese Taipei, and she started off the bench. She was unable to function as a second-half substitute, and in just eight minutes she was brought down twice and helped off the pitch.

The Philippines played in their own half most of the time, chasing the Koreans most of the time. However, Alen Stajcic’s girls were not at all docile and would try to create opportunities whenever the South Korean team gave them a chance, but they found their endings fell short. Some attempts went over the bar, while others failed to get past a clinical South Korean backline that was barely tested in this game.
After the 120-minute-long quarterfinal victory over Chinese Taipei, the physical exhaustion of the Filipinos was palpable, and they eventually ran out of adrenaline to move on in this match.
