The Australian Cricket Team (CA) said on Monday that due to border controls imposed by Western Australia, the fifth test of the upcoming Ashes Series between Australia and England will be moved from Perth to another venue.
The governing body stated that trying to negotiate the conditions of the match to be held at Perth Stadium from January 14th to 18th to adapt to the situation of all parties has proved impossible, and discussions have begun to change the venue.
“We are very disappointed that the Ash test cannot be conducted at the Perth Stadium,” California Chief Executive Nick Hawkley said in a statement.
“We do everything we can… to make it work under the current border and sanitation arrangements, but unfortunately, this is not possible.”
Western Australia has managed to exclude COVID-19 from the state to a large extent through strict controls, and currently prohibits travelers from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia from passing through without 14 days of quarantine.
The fourth test is scheduled to end in Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, on January 9, leaving insufficient time for the players to complete the isolation period.
Hobart was originally scheduled to host the test against Afghanistan in November, but it was postponed due to the Taliban’s takeover of the country, and it is most likely to receive the right to host the fifth test.
Officials in Sydney and Melbourne also stated that they will be preparing to host the second test of the series.
The last time the Minister of Government of Western Australia proposed to exchange dates between Perth and the test held in Adelaide from December 16 to 20, but it was unsuccessful.
Passengers travelling from Queensland to Western Australia will start their first test on Wednesday and can enter without isolation. Sports Minister Tony Buti advised players to go directly to Perth from Brisbane.
The CA statement said: “The complexity of border control, quarantine requirements, and five test series in a tight schedule means that it is unfortunately impossible to coordinate the respective priorities (of all stakeholders).”
“These complexities also mean that any suggestion to change the order of the venues is not feasible.”
