Root sacrifices entry to IPL auction to help England

Joe Root sacrificed his chance to be part of a massive IPL auction to revive England’s Test team’s fortunes.

Root, considered one of England’s modern superstars, has yet to play in the IPL after not selling at auction in 2018. Last week, Root said he was considering a big auction, but added that he would only do so if it wouldn’t distract him from his testing career.

However, the wait to get into the IPL has increased further due to his decision to prioritise England’s Test squad.

“We need to do a lot for this team and it’s worth giving my all,” Root said in the post-match meeting after his side’s 146-point loss to Australia in the fifth Test on Sunday.

“I’m going to make as many sacrifices as I can because I’m very concerned about testing cricket in our country and trying to get us where we want to be,” Root added, confirming that he had turned down the chance to be in the auction.

England’s poor performance in Test cricket over the past year has raised questions about his leadership, but Root has expressed his desire to continue as England’s red captain. “It’s hard to convince people that I’m the right guy when you’ve been hit as hard as we did on this tour. But I can tell you one thing for sure – as long as I get the chance to captain this team , I’m going to give everything for everyone who supports us, for the people around me, for the players – to try and provide an environment in which we can be successful,” Root said.

Starting this year, the IPL has expanded to 10 teams, and a major auction ahead of the upcoming season is scheduled for February 12-13 in Bengaluru.
