On Wednesday, France and Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema was sentenced to a one-year probation and a fine of 75,000 euros (84,000 US dollars) for a sex tape case that shocked French football.

Benzema was found guilty of attempting to blackmail French teammate Mathieu Valbuena in 2015.

The ruling of the court of Versailles is unlikely to affect Benzema’s near-term sports future. After an impressive season in Madrid, the striker is considered one of the favorites to win the Ballon d’Or in Paris on November 29th. French Football Association President Noel Le Grant has stated that even if convicted, Benzema will be allowed to continue to play with the French team.

Benzema’s lawyer said he will appeal.

Benzei, who denied wrongdoing, did not attend the trial held in Versailles for a month, nor did he attend the sentencing. The other four defendants were also found guilty and did not appear in court on Wednesday.
