On Wednesday, Italy’s Supreme Court upheld the verdict that former Brazil striker Robinho was sentenced to nine years in prison for raping a young woman.
Brazil will not extradite its own citizens when sentenced in other countries, although Robinho could be arrested if he travels abroad to countries that have agreements with Italy – nearly 70 including the US, Argentina and anywhere in the EU -Italy issued an international arrest warrant.
Robinho was jailed in 2017 for his involvement in a group sexual assault that took place four years ago while he was still playing for AC Milan. Another member of the group, Ricardo Falco, was also sentenced to nine years in prison, but Italian police have not located the other four.
Italian media reported that the victim was celebrating her 23rd birthday in Milan that night.
Robinho has denied the allegations.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled his appeal inadmissible.
Robinho, 37, started his career at Santos before playing for clubs including Real Madrid, Manchester City and Milan.
He returned to Santos for the third time in 2020, but less than a week later his contract was suspended after sponsors cut ties with the club “out of respect for women”.
