Injured left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux will miss New Zealand’s Women’s World Cup as she is ruled out by Australia.
Selector Shawn Flegler said Molyneux’s expected timeline to recover from a stress fracture in his left foot kept her out of the Women’s Ashes series, which will prevent her from returning late in the World Cup.
“With limited play time and having to complete a 10-day managed quarantine, it was a tough decision, but we weren’t ready to take the risk,” Flagler said.
In Molineux’s absence, fellow spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington got a long-awaited recall. Wellington are the leading wicketkeepers in the Women’s Big Bash League this season.

“Amanda-Jade gives us another high-quality spin option and has the potential to play a big role in spinning the ball off the bat,” Flagler said.
Although Molineux, fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck (foot) and spinner Georgia Wareham (knee) are out with injury, Flegler is optimistic about captain Meg Lanning’s team.
“We’ve been able to put together a very talented team with some fresh faces as well as players with significant World Cup experience,” he said.
Australia will start against England in Hamilton on March 5.
