India’s pride in 3rd ODI & SA

India will look to avoid a major clean-up when they face South Africa in their third and final one-day international in Cape Town Newlands on Sunday.

So far, India’s strategy in the ODI series looks completely out of sync with the demands of the modern white ball game, with batsmen failing to maintain momentum in midfield and bowlers (except Jasprit Bumrah) appearing to be innocuous.

India can only get seven wickets in two ODIs – four in the first and three in the second.

pace and bounce

With R. Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar failing to make an impact, it needs to be seen if head coach Rahul Dravid opts to try Jayant Yadav and Deepak Chahar in Sunday’s game. The first two matches were played on the grounds at Boland Park, where the pace and bounce were not great, and even captain KL Rahul admitted that the situation was more similar to the Indian team’s homecoming. In Newlands, however, there will be more rhythm and rebound.

After winning the match in the first Test, Rahul, who has not scored much on this tour, will be looking to get back to form. The two Iyers – Shreyas and Venkatesh – have yet to light up the stage, with the main problem being their inability to step up the rhythm in midfield. They will want to score faster in the meantime.

All in all, for the Indian team to be competitive, significant improvements are needed in all areas.
