As Mumbai prepares to host another test match in New Zealand 33 years later, it opened the floodgates of memories for Patel, who now lives in Bolton.

“It was a great experience to play for India. In those days, the competition was very fierce. Also, in those days, you didn’t have the infrastructure like today-the domestic games were limited, and then you had to play cricket. “I have not been so successful on the international stage because I have less experience. We don’t have that many games-whether it is domestic cricket or IPL. Now you can play a considerable number of first-class crickets before entering the test side. But the situation was different at the time,” he said.

When he conducted his only test in Mumbai, he enjoyed every moment of the outing. “I have always played very well bowling at Wankhede Stadium, even for Baroda. In those days, Mumbai was a great team with some top batsmen-(Lalchand) Rajput, (Sunil) Gavaskar, ( Chandrakant) Pandit, (Shishir) Hattangadi, (Ravi) Shastri. His international career did not last long. Later, he was controversial when he used a tree stump to chase Raman Lamba in the 1990-91 Dulip Cup final-which resulted in his suspension. But every time a test match is held in Mumbai, Patel will be nostalgic. After all, this is where he realizes his dreams!
