So the India-South Africa series has consumed one captain.

Virat Kohli’s enthusiasm and energy will be missed. Not so much his personality cult.

He is the leader of those who are loyal to him, not everyone. He needs his support staff to push his captain.

He achieved success, keeping his men united by his side, cherishing and pursuing victories overseas. He also has his failures.

Contributions from the lower-middle class are crucial in low-scoring games, and India has not been consistently getting enough runs here. The solidity of southpaw Ravindra Jadeja was missed.

When they had a chance to close the door on South Africa, the Indians allowed the Proteas to sneak back.

Kohli was sent off in India’s second inning at Newlands when he took the game away from South Africa with Pant, a case in point. India is not ruthless enough.

Indian receivers cannot play the right lengths on these South African pitches to maximize their impact. They are sometimes too full.
