Brazilian football superstar Pele paid tribute to his legendary compatriot Diego Maradona on Thursday on the first anniversary of the Argentine’s death at the age of 60.

“A year without Diego. Friends forever,” Bailey wrote on Instagram and posted a picture of the two of them hugging and grinning.

Pele and Maradona, who have never played against each other on the pitch, often compete for the title of the best football player in history.

But since Maradona’s death, the 81-year-old Pele has left their sometimes fierce competition behind and focused on the warm friendship they also shared.

“The world has lost a legend,” he wrote on the day Maradona died of a heart attack.

“One day, I hope, we will play football together in the sky.”

Pele and Maradona were jointly named the best players of the 20th century by FIFA in 2000-the Brazilians were selected by an expert jury, and the Argentines were voted by the fans.
