Tennis star Andy Murray is returning to a game he once thought might be the last time he played. The Australian Open gave the former world No. 1 main sign a wild card, allowing him to return to the tournament for the 14th time.

Murray participated in the Australian Open for the last time in 2019, when he lost to Roberto Bautista Agusta in the first round. Murray, 34, was struggling with a lingering hip injury, which he thought might end his career.

“If this is my last game,” Murray, who won 46 singles titles and 3 Grand Slam titles, said after the match, “this is a terrific way to end.”

Less than a month later, Murray underwent hip resurfacing surgery, hoping to “End my pain.”

Murray has since returned to competitive tennis, climbing to No. 134 in the ATP rankings, and becoming the finalist of the 2021 ATP Awards for the best comeback player of the year. The Scot recently defeated world number 6 Rafael Nadal and world number 25 Dan Evans at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships in Abu Dhabi earlier this month.

Murray said in an interview: “I am really happy to return to the Australian Open, and thank Craig and the team for giving me this opportunity.” statement“I have had some great times in Australia, playing in front of an amazing crowd, and I can’t wait to get back to the court in Melbourne Park.”

Murray’s record at the Australian Open is 48 wins and 13 losses, and is runner-up five times. He withdrew from the event a year ago and almost missed the event after testing positive for COVID-19.

“Andy is known for his fighting spirit, enthusiasm and love of the game,” said Australian Open event director Craig Terry. “I am very happy to welcome him back to Melbourne in January.”

The Australian Open is scheduled to start in Melbourne on January 17.
