Legends Shaun Goater and Richard Dunne look back on Manchester City’s successful 2020/21 season

As part of the exclusive series, Goal teamed up with Manchester City and TECNO to have conversations with Manchester City legends Shaun Goater and Richard Dunne.

In the fourth episode of this series, the two sat down with Chukwu Bethel Harmless, a trainee Manchester City reporter from Goal Africa.

The legend looks back on the very successful 2020/21 season, in which Manchester City crowned the championship for the third time in the past four years.

Both Dunne and Goater believe that Pep Guardiola’s team performed well in a very difficult and tight season.

“I think they did a good job. Based on the fact that last season ended on August 15th, they started this season very slowly, so it was difficult, but when we look at this season, we can say that it was a success. Yes.” Dunn said.

Manchester City started very slowly at the beginning, but found their wings and soon became the limelight of the game.

Goart said: “Like many other clubs, it was a slow and tricky start. Considering the number of games, try to adjust the schedule. It is played every three or four days, but Manchester City has subsequently found its form. Pep (Guardiola) came up with something to make the team more stable, I think we are growing. It’s really nice to see.”

When asked where the Sky Blue team has made the most progress since the last campaign, the former city duo praised the team’s defensive performance.

“As a team, we will look at Manchester City and say that they are the best offensive team in Europe, but they have performed well on the defensive end this season. They changed their mindset and became the best defensive team in Europe. The defender entered the midfield. Similar things have made them more solid and less open to counterattacks. Ruben Dias has always been the true leader of defense.” Dunn said.

At the same time, Goater praised Guardiola’s decision to deploy Joao Cancelo as a generalist. Although he is usually a defender, he often moves to the center of the park.

“This is what Pep (Guardiola) thought of (Ruben) Dias coming in is immortal. His presence as a leader makes the backing stronger. Joao Cancelo adds a whole new dimension. We have already seen Pep use the guard to enter Field, but Cancelo took a step forward. He walked into the house and walked forward. So he actually became number 10.” Goater said.

When asked which team was the most memorable game of the 2020/21 season, Dunn won 4-1 at Anfield, while Goart beat Wolves 4-1.
“The most memorable match was won 4-1 at Anfield. It has been a long time since Manchester City won the title. Liverpool’s match was a real test for them.
Go forward,” Dunn said.

“I will beat Wolves 4-1. It was a wonderful game. From a tactical point of view, it was great because Wolves is a team that beat us, and Pep must know that Wolves are in They will make trouble that day. Manchester City, dominated by wolves, is back. This is a tight game, but how does Manchester City keep going? In the end, they showed 4-1 that they are a machine,” Goater said.
