Kariobangi Sharks 0-1 Tusker: Onyango fires Brewers past Muluya’s troops at Utalii
After holding the former champions in the first half, the Eastlanders were unable to prevent the visitors from scoring in the second half
Tusker remained in the title race after beating Kariobangi Sharks 1-0 in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League meeting at Utalii Ground on Sunday.
Chris Onyango scored the only goal that separated the Nairobi sides in the second half, and later Douglas Mokaya’s penalty was saved by Tusker’s Mike Wanjala.
Brandon Obiero saved Kariobangi Sharks from going down in the sixth minute after Luke Namanda broke into their box and fired a powerful low drive, but the custodian was quick to react and clear the danger.
Onyango would have opened the scoring in the 15th minute, but he shot wide with a clear chance from close range as Tusker settled faster into the game than the Eastlands side. A combination from midfield between Henry Meja and Onyango almost gave the Brewers an opener, but Obiero was alert enough to ensure the final cross from Meja did not reach Onyango’s waiting feet in the 22nd minute.
Obero was made to work once more in the 29th minute as he dived to his left and parried away an effort by Boniface Muchiri who had been put through on goal by Onyango. Robert Matano had to make a change in the 38th minute when Robert Mboya was injured and goalkeeper Wanjala had to be thrown into action.
Meja, who has been included in the Cecafa U23 squad by coach Stanley Okumbi, was unlucky to find the back of the net in the 42nd minute when his effort hit the crossbar with Obiero all but beaten. The 2016 Premier League winners got an opener in the 62nd minute when Onyango’s clinical header found the backpost after he had been picked by Sammy Meja.
William Muluya made two changes in the 71st minute as Peter Lwasa and Erick Juma came on for John Omondi and Julius Masaba respectively. Karioangi Sharks won a penalty in the 78th but Wanjala saved, making sure Tusker did not share points with their rivals. Erick Kapaito was fouled inside the box and Mokaya could not beat the Brewers’ goalkeeper, who came on for his injured teammate.
Humphrey Mieno had to be replaced by Hashim Sempala after he picked up an injury and Apollo Otieno came on for Faraj Ominde, while Jackson Macharia replaced Meja in Matano’s final changes in the 89th minute.
