“He must know some discipline”-Matteus hopes Sane learned his lesson after the World Cup snub

Lothar Matthaus hopes that Leroy Sane will learn from missing the World Cup three years ago, after he pointed out his defensive flaws in the game in Germany’s recent friendly against Denmark.

Bayern Munich winger Sane was a significant omission by the German team in the 2018 Russia Championship, although he was recalled shortly after the game and added to their lineup in the upcoming European Championship.

Former German captain Matthaus appreciates the talent of the former Manchester City player, but questioned whether he has reliable positional discipline at the international level.

What did Matteus say to Sane?

In last week’s 1-1 draw with Denmark, Sane played 86 minutes and then came off as a substitute for the second half in a 7-1 victory over Latvia on Monday.

Looking back on his performance in the Danish game, Matteus said that there are some aspects of Sane’s game that need to be improved-but he also said that the 25-year-old is a potential game-changer.

“As long as a player makes a difference, the team will accept his defensive weaknesses,” he told the goal with Spocks. “Leroy Sane is a player I basically consider to be a great football player with great potential, but he has encountered situations where he did not come back or end in a game against Denmark.

“In the game against Denmark, you can forgive him, but if a player has such a personality, he might do it in the final, and then no one will forgive him.

“I like Sane on the court, but he still needs to learn a discipline or two. After Jogi Low did not take him away in 2018, he should actually learn his lesson.”

Matthaus warns German rivals

Although a country like Germany can never be regarded as an outsider, many people believe that the three-time champion is a team in a transitional period and will not have an impact in the later stages of the game.

Their career has not been helped by being placed in a difficult group with the 2016 European Cup champion Portugal and world champion France.

Matteus admitted that his country faces serious challenges, but warned those who had already given up German opportunities before the ball was kicked out.

“We can’t make ourselves smaller than we are now,” he said. “My opinion of the Portuguese is better than when they won the championship five years ago. Many players play important roles in big clubs. France is full of world-class players.

“These three teams are one of the hottest teams, but we don’t have to hide behind France. We have many players who have won the Champions League in the past ten months, and many players have won the national championship.”
