The country’s Cricket Board (ECB) stated that England’s Eileen Ash is the world’s oldest test player, known as the “pioneer” of the sport, at the age of 110.
Right arm seam Ashe performed seven tests for England after his first match against Australia in 1937. She retired in 1949, but she still played golf until the age of 98, and even practiced yoga at the age of 105.

The European Central Bank called her “an extraordinary woman who leads an extraordinary life.” Her portrait was unveiled at Lord’s in 2019 and became a lifetime honorary member of the Marylebone Cricket Club.
The European Central Bank’s statement read: “Ash – the oldest cricketer in history at the time of her death – was a natural high achiever on and off the court.”
During her career in England, Ash was also seconded to MI6, the British Foreign Intelligence Service, during World War II.
“Our sport is very grateful to its pioneers and Irene is one of them. I am deeply sorry to say goodbye to her today,” said Claire Conner, managing director of women’s cricket at the European Central Bank.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Irene’s family, because they have accepted the loss of such an outstanding woman and the end of an amazing life.”
