Australia’s Pat Cummins will contact Tim Paine before the Ashes opener on Wednesday to seek some late inspiration before the fast bowler as the captain’s debut against England.
Payne resigned as captain due to the “sex texting” scandal last month and led Australia to keep the ashes in England for the first time in the 2019 draw series for nearly 20 years.
Cummins said that since the goalkeeper left the game due to mental health issues, he and Paine have led the team for several conversations and will continue to do so.
“Yes, the chat is good. He obviously still wants him to be here and part of it all, but he needs to go home,” Cummins told reporters on Tuesday.
“He’s fine.
“I might call him again this arvo (in the afternoon) and continue to rely on him to come up with different ideas on how to work with our players. He has a wealth of experience.
“Good guy, (I will) continue to learn from him.”

After Paine served as the deputy captain, Cummins took over the team earlier than expected and said that his promotion has not yet been fully implemented.
He said he was trying to pick some of the winning qualities of some of Australia’s most recent test captains.
“Being the 47th male test captain is almost crazy,” he added.
“The bloodlines of Paine, Smithy, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Steve Waugh-they are the legends of the game I have watched since I was a kid.
“Steve Waugh was in the ashes with us last time. He is great, how simple he keeps things.
“When I went out to bowl, Michael Clark made me feel 10 feet taller, even though I didn’t feel super confident. Ricky Ponting was a great person.
“Again, it might not hit me yet. Great.”
