The first game of the much-awaited WPL finally went underway today. Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants became the first teams to play a match at the WPL.

However, as the first over of the game was bowled, a few records were created. Gujarat Giants won the toss and decided to bowl first on a turning track at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium.

Ashleigh Gardener took the ball in the first over for the Giants, thus registering her name as the first bowler to ball at the WPL.

Having put into bat first, Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews came in to open for the Mumbai Indians. However, it was Yastika Bhatia who took the strike on the first ball, thus becoming the first-ever batter to take the strike at the WPL.

Though there was much anticipation surrounding the first ball, nothing really happened. Ashleigh Gardener bowled a good-length delivery, just outside the off-stump. Yastika punched it off the back foot, which was fielded by the fielder at covers.

The first over was a pretty decent one from Gardener as she managed to give away just the two runs. However, Hayley Matthews created history in the second over itself, as she hit Mansi Joshi for consecutive boundaries on the first two balls. first ball for a six, and the second one for a four, thus becoming the first player to hit a six, as well as a four in the WPL.

The credit for taking the first wicket at the WPL goes to Tanuja Kanwer, who got Yastika Bhatia out in the third over of the game. Yastika, who looked uncomfortable right from the start, was caught by Georgia Wareham at the covers. With that, Wareham became the first fielder to take a catch at the WPL.
