Why Kane Williamson is not playing today’s IPL match 7 against Delhi Capitals?

Match 7 of the Indian Premier League is set to be played between David Warner-led Delhi Capitals and Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans. Gujarat’s captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to bowl first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. However, Gujarat are coming into this game without their star batter Kane Williamson.

Why is Williamson not playing today?

Kane Williamson was forced off the field in the 13th over of the match against the Chennai Super Kings due to a knee injury. The incident occurred while he was fielding on the deep square leg boundary, attempting to save a ball that was headed for six off Ruturaj Gaikwad’s bat. Williamson’s athletic leap and quick reflexes allowed him to palm the ball back into the field of play, saving two runs for his team.

Following his injury, Williamson was taken for scans and the extent of his injury revealed that it was in the best interest of New Zealand Cricket and the player himself that he be sent back to his homeland where he could receive proper treatment. Post this, the Gujarat Titans franchise had posted a video confirming Williamson bidding the team camp goodbye. “Sad to be leaving so soon. I will miss the camp for sure. See you soon,” Williamson had said in the video. Thus, Williamson has left the team camp and is now receiving medical attention in his home country.

Who is playing instead of Williamson?

The team has decided to play star South African batter Dawid Miller instead of the injured Kane Williamson. David Miller was bought by the franchise during the last year’s mega auction. Miller was one of the Gujarat Giants’ most formidable players last season and played a huge role in their victory run. In 16 games, he scored 481 runs for the franchise last season at an average of 68.71.
