Indian batter Yastika Bhatia showcased her brilliant fielding skills in the second one-dayer of the ongoing series against New Zealand.

Playing against the Black Ferns in Queenstown on Tuesday (February 15), Bhatia pulled off a terrific catch in the slips where she initially juggled but eventually secured the wicket for her side.

The breakthrough involved Kiwis’ key top-order batter Sophie Devine, who had raced along her way to 33 off 29 deliveries at the time with New Zealand aiming to overhaul India’s stiff-looking 270/6.

The stunning reflex catch was on display off the sixth ball of the eighth over in the New Zealand innings.

Facing left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s straightish delivery around the off-stump, Devine went for a cut shot.

But the ball from Gayakwad cramped her for room as she could only get a thick outside edge and nick the ball to the left of first-slip Yastika Bhatia.

What stood out about Bhatia’s take is not just her reflexes but also the calmness and the awareness she displayed in that moment. The slip fielder did juggle up at the first attempt of the ball but was always mindful of where it had ballooned up.

She adjusted well on time and made an absolutely perfect straight dive to complete the catch and secure an important wicket for her team. Thanks to Yastika Bhatia’s brilliant catch India were able to get back in the contest with Devine’s dismissal.

Earlier in the contest, Bhatia, batting No.3, contributed a useful 31 off 38 balls to her team’s score before falling to an untimely dismissal. The 21-year-old left-hand batter is very new to international cricket. She has played 1 Test, 4 ODIs and 3 T20Is for the country.
