20-year-old Will Smeed looked in ominous form while playing for the Quetta Gladiators in their Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022 match against the Peshawar Zalmi on Friday, January 28 at the National Stadium in Karachi. The Young Turk came into the PSL on the back of some blistering knocks for the The Birmingham Phoenix in the inaugural edition of the Hundred.
Smeed brought up his half-century off 35 balls after the Gladiators were sent in to bat by Shoaib Malik’s Zalmi. The right-hander played quite a few breathtaking strokes, but the six he hit of Ben Cutting grabbed the limelight. In the last ball of the ninth over, Smeed smashed Cutting for a colossal six on the leg side.
Cutting dished out a slower bouncer and Smeed spotted it early. The batter rocked back on the back foot and pulled the ball with all his might. Smeed generated enough power in his stroke to send the ball out of the stadium.

Smeed, Ahsan Ali register third-highest partnership in PSL
During his knock, Smeed got an able partner in Ahsan Ali, who was equally brutal. Ali got to his fifty off 33 balls after which he stepped on the gas. The opening batter notched a 46-ball knock of 73, laced with eight fours and three sixes. He perished after leg-spinner Usman Qadir accounted for his prized wicket in the 16th over.
Ali and Smeed put on 155 runs for the opening wicket off 15.3 overs. They also registered the joint third-highest partnership in the history of the PSL. Sharjeel Khan and Babar Azam tops the list after their 176-run stand while playing for Karachi Kings against Islamabad United on February 2021.
