WATCH: Rohit Sharma takes spectacular diving catch; nearly collides with Suryakumar Yadav

Rohit Sharma is safe as houses when it comes to fielding and he showed his skills during India’s opening T20I against West Indies on Wednesday, February 16 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In the last ball of the Caribbean innings, Sharma took a spectacular catch to send Odean Smith back to the hut.

Harshal Patel bowled a slower delivery and Smith tried to take the bowler downtown for a six. But Smith didn’t get enough timing and the ball went high up in the air. The 34-year-old showed a lot of agility and ran sideways from the extra cover region.

Rohit Sharma didn’t have any troubles in taking the catch and give Patel his second wicket. Moreover, the Nagpur-born Sharma evaded a collision with Suryakumar Yadav. Both Rohit and the Indian team members were jubilant after the catch was completed.

After opting to bowl first, India restricted the West Indies to 157 for the loss of seven wickets. Nicholas Pooran top-scored for the visitors with a 43-ball knock of 61 with the help of four fours and five sixes. Skipper Kieron Pollard also made an unbeaten 19-ball 24.

Patel and Ravi Bishnoi picked up two wickets apiece for the Men in Blue. Afterwards, India chased the target down in 18.5 decent overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma had a day with the bat as he scored 40 runs off 19 balls with four fours and three sixes .

Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 18-ball 34 and Venkatesh Iyer’s 13-ball 24 guided India past the finishing line. The duo put on 48 runs for the sixth wicket and took the home team home. Roston Chase picked up two wickets while Sheldon Cottrell and Fabian Allen got one wicket each.

After India’s win, Rohit Sharma was delighted with the team’s performance. He also had words of praises for Ravi Bishnoi, who picked up two crucial wickets.

“Bishnoi is a very talented guy which is why we drafted him into the squad straightaway. We see something different in him. He’s got lot of variations and skillset with him. He can bowl at any stage and it gives us a lot of options to rotate the other bowlers.

“Very happy with his first game for India and he’s got a bright future and it’s just about us now on how we use him,” Rohit said.
