19-year-old batter Tilak Varma made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in the ongoing edition of the tournament. While playing for the Mumbai Indians (MI), led by Rohit Sharma, the Young Turk will be able to rub shoulders with some of the best cricketers around the globe. He first played against the Delhi Capitals (DC) where he scored 22 runs before getting out to Khaleel Ahmed.

He looked in impressive touch as he played at a strike rate of 146.67. But Varma was at his very best during MI’s match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Saturday, April 2 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. After being asked to chase down 194, MI got off to an impressive start courtesy of a half-century from Ishan Kishan.

Varma came to bat after Navdeep Saini accounted for the wicket of Anmolpreet Singh. From there on, Kishan and Varma put on 81 runs for the third wicket to put MI on the driver’s seat. While Kishan was a tad sedate in his approach, Varma went hell for leather.

Varma scored 61 runs off 33 balls with the help of three fours and five sixes. He played at a strike rate of 184.85 and gave the Royals an almighty scare. RR off-spinner Ravi Ashwin dismissed him in the 15th over to cut short his stay in the middle.

Ashwin bowled a conventional off-break delivery and Varma went for a slog sweep. However, the batter was beaten all ends up and the ball crashed onto the stumps. Later, Ashwin vented out some of his frustration and gave Varma a send-off.

Varma’s knock went in vain as the Royals won the match by 23 runs. After being put into bat first, the Royals racked up a huge score of 193 for eight on the board. Jos Buttler smashed a 68-ball ton to put RR in a commanding position.

From there on, MI tried their best before falling short by quite a distance. Yuzvendra Chahal had a chance of picking up a hat-trick, but Karun Nair dropped Murugan Ashwin in the slips to deny the leg-spinner the milestone.
