The IPL 2022 got off to a contrasting start for new entrants Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after Indian speedster Mohammad Shami got Giants’ elegant opening batter KL Rahul out with a peach of a delivery first ball on Monday (March 28).
Known for extracting seam movement out of most surfaces, Shami bagged the prized scalp of the opposition skipper and arguably their best player with the one that moved off the deck late at high speeds and induced an edge to the wicketkeeper.
The much-anticipated tournament opener for Titans and Giants kicked off in a celebratory mood for the former, as their experienced Indian quick delivered a wicket off the very first ball of the game at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Mohammad Shami got the technically languid batter opened up just that slightly and got him to nick one through to the keeper Matthew Wade, who duly completed the take. Interestingly, however, Rahul was given not out on the field. But the DRS ensured that the right call ultimately prevailed.

Mohammad Shami gets Titans’ IPL 2022 up and running with a spark
Perhaps the reason why the standing umpire gave the decision not out despite the ball shaping away from close to the outside edge was that the bat was also near Rahul’s front pad at the same time. The DRS replay confirmed the same.
But to Rahul’s misfortune, Mohammad Shami’s top delivery had also taken the nick along the way to Wade’s direction behind the stumps. Thanks to the technology, Shami and Titans got just rewards for a magnificent piece of action from their experienced Indian fast-bowler.
Dropped from India’s T20I side after struggles through India’s disappointing Super 12 exit at the T20 World Cup in UAE last November, Mohammad Shami got his IPL 2022 off to a thrilling start, bagging the wicket of Rahul.
Shami took 6 wickets from his five matches of the World Cup but in a tournament where NRR became a big factor after India’s horrible losses to Pakistan and New Zealand, his economy rate of 8.84 proved way too costly.
But the bowler had a significantly better IPL 2021 where, playing for Punjab Kings (PBKS), he took 19 wickets from 14 matches at 7.50 runs per over.
