Rajasthan Royals (RR) opening batter Jos Buttler was in tremendous form on Saturday (April 2) in the IPL 2022, smashing his former franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) for a knock of 100 off 68 deliveries at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
The England maverick batted in top gear from the beginning, hitting 11 fours and 5 sixes, on his way to another IPL century. The explosive batter’s hundred also became the first score of 100 or more in the early days of IPL 2022.
Intent on ensuring RR maximised their time out in the middle on another flat batting surface for the tournament, Jos Buttler came out all guns blazing and took the five-time IPL winners MI to the cleaners. He was especially severe on MI’s inexperienced Indian recruit Basil Thampi.

Jos Buttler goes hammer and tongs against MI’s Basil Thampi
The batter made his intentions clear very early into his innings, taking apart from Thampi for a string of boundaries inside the powerplay. Bowling only the fourth over of MI’s bowling effort, the hapless Kerala pacer went for a whopping 26 runs, including 20 from the bat of the dangerous Jos Buttler.
The mighty Buttler unleashed his wrath on Thampi, hitting him for a stretch of 4, 6, 6, 4 and 6 to finish the over. And it was never mindless slogging. The batter tactically played with the brain of the bowler, getting him to bowl according to his wishes.
That happened via a four off the very first ball off a short of good length delivery. Buttler created this stroke out of almost nothing with the intention to disturb Thampi’s rhythm and force him to bowl fuller. But once Thampi pitched it full, the aggressor then slammed the next two balls for sixes through the long-on region, one bigger than the other.
At this point, the batter would’ve anticipated a change in plans from the opposition quick. But Thampi curiously kept the full-length going, presumably with the idea of executing a yorker. However, Jos Buttler was deep into his crease and duly dispatched the next two balls as well, with the first finding the boundary over the bowler’s head and the next once again landing into the crowd at long-on.
Notably, this was only Jos Buttler’s second hundred in his very successful IPL career. The batter had also hit a century versus the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the previous edition of the tournament.
The 31-year-old has a very good record under his belt against MI in his IPL career, with his 400 runs coming in just 6 innings with an average of 80 and strike-rate of 161.29.
