Young Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Ishan Kishan evoked the memories of watching the legendary MS Dhoni at his peak as he unveiled the great cricketer’s signature helicopter shot in the IPL 2022 on Sunday (March 27).

Facing Delhi Capitals (DC) pacer Shardul Thakur’s full-pitched delivery, Kishan dispatched the ball in full force through the on-side with his willow waving just like Dhoni’s did in his heyday.

Also born in Jharkhand, the left-hander sent the ball off the square like a tracer bullet at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, adding four runs to his and his team’s kitty.

Often criticised for his inconsistency, Ishan Kishan came up with his very best at the start of MI’s tournament campaign.

Attempting a yorker on the fourth ball of the 20th over in MI’s first-innings, Thakur got his execution wrong and saw Ishan Kishan absolutely hammer the full-pitched ball in his radar for a four through the on-side.

Eyeing proper connection, Kishan pushed his back leg further back inside the crease and gave himself extra space to get underneath the delivery.

Once the ball was in his arc, the batter unleashed his wrath and disclosed his own, languid version of the helicopter shot that Dhoni made famous across the globe in more extravagant fashion.

It was a fruitful return to the IPL for Ishan Kishan, who had faced criticism from all sections for a poor season in MI jersey last year. Kishan went through 10 innings of the tournament played on neutral surfaces in UAE and India with an aggregate of 241 runs at an average of 26.77 and strike-rate of 133.88. His tally featured just two scores of 50 or more.

This, in direct contrast to his breakthrough season in IPL a year before, where he smashed a whopping 516 runs while averaging 57.33 and carrying a strike-rate of 145.76. The youngster was one of the key reasons why MI were able to secure their fifth IPL trophy on challenging wickets in UAE.

On the day, the 23-year-old took an extra liking to the DC bowling attack, hitting an unbeaten 81* off 48 deliveries, including 11 fours and 2 sixes.
