Chasing a paltry 129-run target on a flat pitch, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were expected to coast along to an easy win against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Mumbai.
But the ghosts of ’49 all out’ seem to have reappeared for their passionate fans when the team’s top-order, including skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli, suffered a disappointing collapse on Wednesday (March 30).
Struggling to counter the swing and seam extracted by KKR’s new-ball pairing Umesh Yadav and Tim Southee at high speeds, RCB were reduced to 17 for 3 to reignite memories of their infamous collapse against the same opposition back in IPL 2017.

Disappointing RCB collapse gives KKR a sniff in IPL 2022 encounter
Anuj Rawat wicket
Faf du Plessis wicket
Virat Kohli wicket
KKR, who would’ve had their shoulders dropped after an insipid first half with the bat, got right back into the contest after RCB’s top-order left a lot to be desired with their powerplay performance. Aiming to take the game completely away from the opposition, RCB quickly raced to 17 runs but at the lost of three wickets.
The first one to go was their young left-hander Anuj Rawat, who nicked a sharp outswing delivery from Umesh through to keeper Sheldon Jackson at a comfortable height. Rawat was rushed and squared up by the speed and the swing on Umesh’s brilliant delivery and could only edge the ball behind the stumps.
Following Rawat to the pavillion was the team’s skipper Du Plessis, who was squared up by a top-class outswinger by Umesh’s pace partner Tim Southee. Unfortunately for the South African great, he got a top-edge on the ball which flew straight to the waiting point fielder.
On the very next ball, the first of Umesh’s second over of the innings, Kohli proved guilty of playing away from his body once again and disappointingly, almost guided the ball through to Jackson off his outside edge. It was another occasion where Kohli’s frontfoot stance and push held him back against swing and seam movement outside the off-stump.
The three quick wickets left RCB reeling at 17 for 3 in the first 13 balls of the innings and would’ve got them worried and unsettled even as KKR’s 128 all out presented an insignificant task on a relatively flat batting surface at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
