The ongoing edition of the U19 World Cup 2022 in the West Indies witnessed a horrific incident. On Saturday, January 29, the Plate Semi-Final 2 between Ireland U19 and Zimbabwe U19 took place at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad. During the sixth over of the game, earthquake hit the scenes at the venue, taking many by surprise.
Right-handed batter Brian Bennett was on strike with Matthew Humphreys operating for Ireland. During that time, the earth shook for around 20 seconds and the magnitude was recorded at 9.0 in the Richter scale. The broadcasting was also disrupted to a large extent when the earthquake surfaced.

As far as the game is concerned, Zimbabwe opted to bat first after winning the toss. Zimbabwe lost their first wicket in the third over through a run out after opener Matthew Welch couldn’t make his ground. In the very next over, Welch’s opening partner Emmanuel Bawa, also Zimbabwe’s skipper, perished to Humphreys.

Later, Bennett and Steven Paul put on 52 runs for the third wicket and helped their team recover to some extent. Humphreys again came to the party and broke the ominous-looking stand by getting rid of Paul, who scored 24 runs off 41 balls with two fours.
Bennett was starting to look dangerous, having scored 37 runs off 56 balls with seven fours. But Muzamil Sherzad had other ideas as the right-arm fast medium bowler removed him in the 23rd over of the Zimbabwe innings.
Soon after Sherzad also pinned Connor Mitchell, who had a painstaking stay in the middle with a 34-ball knock of nine. Jamie Forbes and Humphreys got rid of Rogan Wolhuter and Matthew Schonken respectively to put more pressure on the Zimbabwe batting.
At the time of writing the article, Zimbabwe were tottering at 146 for seven in 42 overs with David Bennett playing on 31.
