Sanju Samson made his T20I debut for India way back in 2015, but he hasn’t quite been able to cement his place in the national team. But the selectors included him for the three-match T20I series against Dasun Shanaka’s Sri Lanka. In the first game on Thursday, he didn’t get a chance to bat as the likes of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer did the job for the Men in Blue.
In the second game, Samson got off to a sedate start, scoring 17 off his first 19 balls. But in the 13th over from Lahiru Kumara, the batter expressed himself. He started the over with a four through the long leg region and followed it up with a 107ks six over the bowler’s head.
In an attempt to bowl away from Samson, Kumara churned out a wide. In the next ball, Samson creamed the bowler for a six over the cover boundary. After a dot delivery, Samson again crunched another six over Kumara’s head. In the end, Kumara had the last laugh as he got rid of the right-hander, who scored 39 off 25 with two fours and three sixes.

After being set a target of 184, India chased it down in 17.1 overs. Samson reckoned that the playing conditions allowed them to play their shots freely. Samson said that it took a bit of time for him to get going since he was playing after a long gap.
“I think the wicket was playing really well. The outfield is flying, boundaries short at this ground. When we were in good rhythm, we knew this is easily chasable. 10 per over at this ground isn’t a huge task. The partnership with Shreyas Iyer helped me take extra time to get the rhythm back. We both have played enough cricket to understand who is going well and who needs time.

“I wanted to go after the bowling, but the rhythm wasn’t there for the starting 10-12 balls. It has been a very long time since I played a game. I have been in the bubble and out of quarantine. So, I took a bit of extra time and after getting one boundary I felt I got the rhythm back, happy about it,” Samson said after the game.
