KKR hand GT their first defeat of the season
Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans took the field in the first game of the day at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This game was probably one of the best games the Indian Premier League has ever witnessed. When the match began, no one had anticipated the drama and entertainment that would follow. GT entered the match without their regular captain Hardik Pandya. Afghani leg-spinner Rashid Khan pitched in his absence.
Winning the toss hosts Gujarat Titans decided to bat first. The team’s top 3 put them to 100 runs in just 11.4 overs. Young Sai Sudarshan impressed everyone with a brilliant 53 off 38 balls. The inning had fewer boundaries but Sai made up for it with his running between the wickets. A rapid 63 from 24 balls by Vijay Shankar put GT on top as they finished at 204 runs in their 20 overs. It seemed like a fair score and GT were confident of defending it. However, Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh had something else in mind.
Coming in to chase, KKR lost their openers early. However, Venkatesh Iyer and captain Nitish Rana rebuilt the innings and took KKR to a commendable position. But, just as things were sailing smoothly, KKR lost quick wickets. GT’s stand-in captain Rashid Khan took a hattrick to dissect any hopes KKR had of winning. KKR needed 29 runs to win in the final over and that’s when KKR found a new savior in the form of Rinku Singh. Rinku smashed 5 consecutive sixes off Yash Dayal to steer KKR home in one of the most historic wins of the IPL. After today’s game, KKR have won 2 out of their 3 games and are comfortably seated at the second spot in the points league.
