Third consecutive golden duck for Suryakumar Yadav

Things are not looking good for Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav. The right-handed batsman has ended India vs Australia ODI series without getting off the mark after being bowled by Ashton Agar in the final ODI.

Three consecutive golden ducks for Surya

This was the third golden duck for Suryakumar Yadav. A golden duck in cricket is an incident when a batsman gets out on the very first ball of his innings. Thus, of the three ODIs of this series, Surya got out on the first ball in. all three of them.

In the first ODI, Surya was removed by Mitchell Starc after the 32-year-old was beaten by Starc’s pace. The story in the second ODI was not much different either. It was the same bowler, who got Surya out in almost a similar manner. Surya was left exposed in front of Starc’s sheer pace and insane swing.

In both these ODIs, India had lost early wickets and needed Surya to be there at the crease for a while. Quite contrary to that, Surya got out in the first ball itself. However, in the third ODI, India were in a better position when Surya walked in. Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya had set the pedestal for India’s victory. All Surya had to do was to play an anchor while Hardik did the hitting.

This time, it was Agar who got the best of Surya. Agar bowled a short ball, trying to entice Surya into playing a shot, and his plan eventually succeeded. Surya tried to play one of his trademark cut shots, ignoring the trajectory of the ball. The ball kept low and Surya was clean bowled.

Concerns raised

The last three outings have raised concerns about Surya’s selection into the Indian team. Surya was given priority based on his T20 form while talents like Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson had to sit out. Surya has had a string of low scored in ODIs now and hasn’t gone big in his last 10 innings.

With Iyer missing out due to injury, this raises questions about Surya’s selection into the ODI team. Cricket pundits are demanding that Hooda and Samson be groomed in the ODI team ahead of the World Cup, else the Indian middle order could struggle.
