A look at the team combinations, depth chart, recent form, and the fantasy potential of key players from the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp ahead of IPL2022

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) Team Composition & Combinations for IPL 2022
SRH have assembled a new look squad after they decided against retaining their top overseas players in Warner, Bairstow and Rashid Khan from last season. As hinted by their bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan, SRH would open with Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson looking for a RHB-LHB combination followed by Markram, Tripathi and Pooran in the middle-order with Samad and Shepherd sharing the power-hitting duties. The bowling attack will comprise of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Natarajan, Sundar and one of Tyagi, Malik or Gopal.
Abhishek Sharma, the opener
Opening isn’t new to Abhishek Sharma as he has opened the batting for his state side Punjab and SRH in the past. But SRH have a number of batters who are best suited to the opening position like K Williamson, A Markram and R Tripathi. So most probably he won’t get a longer rope and has to start strong to retain the opening spot.

If we go by Muralidharan’s statement, Markram, Tripathi and Pooran will all bat at No.3, 4 and 5 respectively which is atleast one position lower than their effective spot. Tripathi is best suited at opening while Markram is best utilised at the top or as a pace-hitter down the order and regarding Pooran, PBKS had made the mistake of batting him at No.5 and exposing him to pace which might happen in this case too.
Legspinner or an additional pacer?
SRH have to choose between a legspinner in Gopal or an additional pacer in Tyagi or U Malik in the playing eleven. Gopal has been ineffective for a while now but offers batting depth while Tyagi and U Malik provides high pace variety to the pace attack. They ‘re likely to start with one out of the two pacers in the eleven.

STUD
Players who have proven themselves to be top-scoring fantasy players and are popular.
Kane Williamson – The New Zealand skipper has been a consistent performer in the league since 2018 and is likely to open the batting this season making him a must-have fantasy option. Since 2018 IPL, he averages 42 Dream11 batting points per game but his fitness is a concern though since he’s on his recovery from an elbow injury which might affect his batting.
BANKERS
The players who provide good value for their credits and can be banked upon for consistent returns.
Aiden Markram – The talented South African batter has been quite successful in his short T20I career so far scoring 588 runs at an average of 39.2 and a strike-rate of 147. His best batting position is opening but he’s expected to slot in at No.3. He averages 32 Dream11 batting points in six games at the IPL.
SLEEPER
The players who provide decent enough value but is undervalued or is just not a well-known player.
Abhishek Sharma – As discussed in the team combinations section, he’s likely to open and along with his tidy left-arm spin he makes a wonderful fantasy package. If he clicks, he could be a great differential buy for your side. While he has a collective batting and bowling Dream11 points average of just 24 in the IPL, it is likely to increase exponentially this year.
Romario Shepherd – Individually he doesn’t seem to offer much fantasy value but as a package he’s quite effective. Since 2018 in all T20s, he averages 21 and 36 Dream11 points with the bat and ball respectively. With him likely to bowl at the death and bat at No.7 for SRH makes him a good differential pick.
RISKY BUSINESS
The players who carry an element of risk with them which may be due to bad form, injury, lack of game time, etc…
Rahul Tripathi – Similar to Markram his best position in the batting order is opening but he’s likely to slot in at No.4 and is expected to play the role of a spin-hitter which he’s weak against as his average of 23 against spin suggests. Since 2018 IPL , he averages 29 Dream11 batting points per game.
Nicholas Pooran – Pooran is one of the best spin-hitters going around but his game against high pace is still a work in progress. If SRH make him to bat at No.5, he would face pace bowling a lot more than ideal thus affecting his effectiveness with the bat. Since 2018 IPL, he averages 28 Dream11 batting points per game. His wicket-keeping points are a bonus.
T Natarajan – Best known for his death bowling skills, Natarajan might be seen as a good fantasy option since he bowls at a phase where batters don’t place a premium on their wickets. But Natarajan is a defensive bowler who relies heavily on yorkers at the death and uses the slower balls only sparingly which reduces his wicket-taking potential at the death. He’s also returning back from an injury. Since 2018 IPL, he averages 27 Dream11 bowling points per game.
TRAP
The players who seem like good buys, but won’t score enough points to justify their credits or hype.
Abdul Samad – He bats too low at No.7 to make much impact with the bat. His bowling too will be less utilised making him a weak fantasy option. Since his debut in the IPL, he averages only 17 Dream11 batting points per game.
Washington Sundar – He’s an economical bowler but doesn’t provide wicket-taking value and bats too low to make any impact with the bat. He averages 9 and 16 Dream11 points with both bat and ball respectively since 2018 in the IPL.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar – His bowling has been on a steady decline since 2018 mainly due to constant injuries which has made his pace drop to the 130ks. The once Purple cap holder has been struggling to pick wickets consistently in recent times and has a Dream11 bowling points average of just 19 in the past four seasons.
FLEX
The players whose credit values are less but still provide some decent value thereby helping to balance out the lineup.
Umran Malik – He’s pretty quick and has clocked speeds close to 150kph last season but is still quite raw to expect consistency. Although he can be a good budget pick at his price.
Opponent Fantasy Value:
Every team is vulnerable to a certain batting type or a bowler type depending on their setup. For example, a batting unit full of right-handers will be vulnerable against left-arm spinners and wristspinners or a bowling attack void of any quality new-ball bowlers will leak runs in the Powerplay and allow the openers to score freely. These vulnerabilities of the team allow certain player types from opponent sides to perform freely against them which can be used to pick those player types from the opponent side in your fantasy team. As far as Sunrisers Hyderabad are concerned, you can pick the player types listed below from the opponent side if those player types are available.
- Death Bowlers
- Hit the deck pacers
- Spin Hitters (especially ones that don’t have a weakness against offspin)
