Subramaniam Badrinath recalls an incident when Dhoni was fired up while batting

The Chennai Super Kings will be looking to give a fitting farewell to their ‘Thala’ by winning a trophy this year. They have been the most loved franchise in the IPL and also one of the most successful one.

The team has so far won four championships and will attempt to tie Mumbai Indians for the most trophies this year. The defending champion Gujarat Titans defeated CSK in the initial round, but they rallied to overcome Lucknow Super Giants earlier this week.

Subramaniam Badrinath, a former member of the team, recalled one of the most memorable CSK moments from 2010 before the team’s big encounter against MI on Saturday at the Wankhede Stadium.

Badrinath narrates an incident

The Super Kings were playing Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in Dharamsala in their final league encounter; CSK needed a win to advance to the semi-finals. Dhoni had a brilliant game, scoring an unbeaten 54 off 29 deliveries as the team chased down a 193-run target with five balls remaining.

After the victory, Dhoni displayed an unusual amount of enthusiasm by punching his helmet right away. The motivation behind the CSK captain’s fervent win celebration has now been disclosed by Badrinath.

“I never saw MS Dhoni reacting like that in the past, nor I’ve seen that from him ever again. 2010 was an important year in his CSK career. Dhoni had missed a few games due to a forearm injury and I think we lost 5 games on the trot. We were in pressure,” Badrinath recalled during his commentary for Star Sports.

“Dhoni’s form wasn’t good as well. He wanted to prove CSK were a good team. Everyone was saying, ‘Yeah the team is good, but where are the trophies?’. In that game, Dhoni took his time, I forged a partnership with him but then I got out. In the last two overs, though, Dhoni went into a different zone altogether. In that very moment, we realized Dhoni is going to win the game for us,” Badrinath concluded.
